Howdy Lazy Susan Band fans! Well, it’s probably a bit too early to compose a “year in review” post (even though it was QUITE the year), so I’ll keep this one simple: our last show of 2018 will be on December 12 at Carbone’s in Minneapolis. The LSB trio will be slinging harmony vocals in a laid-back acoustic show – perfect for the Holiday season!
We’ve been rehearsing some new songs recently, and we already have a show booked for January, so even though we’re taking a bit of a break, we’ll be back soon! Keep your eye out here for more details as they become available, and watch out for Hipster Santas!
Ahh, fall. That amazing time of year when the leaves turn, the kids go back to school, and your favorite rock band starts smelling of pumpkin spice. OK, so maybe we made that last bit up. But one thing we’re NOT kidding about is how honored we are to be playing at the HOPEStock benefit to fight cystic fibrosis! Sponsored by the With One Breath organization, this outdoor festival in Plymouth will be headlined by the legendary Gear Daddies and is sure to be an amazing time. We’re one of many bands, so we hope you’ll buy your tickets now and join us at the Hilde Performance Center on October 6th!
Then, the following Friday we’ve been asked to play the “Rocktober” 8th Anniversary party for our favorite St. Paul brewery, Flat Earth. And we close out the month on October 25th by returning to Can Can Wonderland (scene of our most recent CD release party), opening for two awesome local bands, the Nighthowlers and Mango. That show will include a costume contest for those itching to get out their early Halloween groove on.
As always, more details on the Events page. Hope to see you at one – or all – of those shows in October!
Phew! What a long, semi-strange tour it was…who am I kidding, it was amazing! Since mid-April, J.Bell and the Lazy Susan Band have been gigging around Minnesota and Wisconsin, playing eleven shows (mostly in “full band” mode), including our immensely satisfying and unique CD release party for “Greetings from Apocalyptic Falls”. But that was just the beginning. We also played in front of incredibly receptive crowds at Carbone’s, Flat Earth Brewery (above), and the Tavern Lounge. But perhaps the peak experience of them all was opening up for Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers at the 7th Street Entry. I mean, just check out this SOLD OUT crowd:
I snapped that photo with my phone in between songs and it just doesn’t do the crowd justice; even though most of them bought tickets to see the Peacemakers, they cheered for us like we were the headliners. We couldn’t have felt more welcomed! The look on J. Bell’s face below pretty much says it all: we can’t believe how lucky we were to be able to do this. And then to watch the Peacemakers blow away the crowd even further, and to hang with them at two more private parties…well, we don’t know how to put it into words how it felt.
There’s a boatload more pictures by Jason Narverud of Cute Fox Studios over in our picture gallery. They tell the story much better than I can!
Now, it’s time for most of the band to take a well-earned break for a few months. But J. Bell isn’t quite done…he’ll be on stage by himself, with nuthin’ but a guitar and a microphone, at the Turf Club this coming Tuesday…opening up for Roger Clyne solo! This will be an intimate, unique show completely unlike any other you’ve seen from Justin or Roger, and Justin is promising to play some songs you haven’t heard live in a long time.
And now before I sign off for the summer, I know I speak for the band when I say THANK YOU to all the amazing fans, friends, and family who have supported us over the last few months. Your encouragement, cheers, and just plain old showing up have made us feel like rock stars. Here’s to you!
Tonight, we have the amazing privilege to open up for Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis. The show is sold out, and we’re beyond excited. Looking forward to seeing many of you there, and making some new friends!
Greetings from Apocalypt— uh, I mean, greetings from Minnesota! Hello, Lazy Susan fans, it’s your friendly neighborhood bass player Mike D. here, logging in to let you know that I am indeed alive, despite my brush with the incredibly deadly Botswanan Bass Flu last week. Aided by the miracles of modern pharmacology, I was able to beat the odds and stay awake for more than a few hours in order to play our CD release party at Can Can Wonderland. And I know I speak for the band when I say “THANK YOU!!!” to all of those who joined us for the show. Your hearty cheers and undivided attention made us all feel like rock stars, and probably kept me upright.
I don’t know if I’ve ever played a show like that. Because the “concept” behind our album “Greetings from Apocalyptic Falls” was the imminent end of the world, we tried to set the stage, stay very serious during the set, and even pretend that our cell phones might hold the answers. It was very difficult not to interact with our devoted crowd, who cheered as the took the stage and stayed engaged throughout the set. What a relief it was to rock out in our more traditional manner for the second set and to let you all know how much you mean to us!
And as if that weren’t enough, the fabulous Nick Hensley closed out our night and made everyone feel warm and fuzzy with his sweet buttery gravel voice and amazing songs. We’re not sure how we’re going to top that night!
OK, maybe we won’t actually try to top May 19th…but we’re certainly not done playing! In fact, we’ve lined up a boatload of shows in June and July, as you can see on our Events page. It all starts the very first day of June at Flat Earth Brewery in St. Paul. This will be the rare full-band, early start (6:30 pm), family-friendly show, and we hope you’ll join us!
The world won’t end if you don’t…but it might seem a little flatter. 😉
What if you learned the sun was going super nova, and all of us on Earth had just 24 hours to live? What would you do? Not an easy question to answer, is it?
Well, instead of worrying about the answers, j. bell and his songwriting partners in crime, $2 Bill and BPZMAG wrote an album’s worth of songs around this question. And then they hit the recording studio, bringing in bassist Mike D. and drummer Kent Mortimer to complete several tunes. And the result is: “Greetings from Apocalyptic Falls”, a record unlike anything you’ve ever heard from the Lazy Susan Band.
Filled with synths, electric drums, and contemplative lyrics, our first “concept album” is finally ready to be released. And we want YOU to join us at Can Can Wonderland on May 19th to help us celebrate it. This will be our first time playing this amazing venue, and the only time you’ll be able to hear the entire album played live from beginning to end. Here’s the schedule for the night:
We’ll have more details to reveal soon, but for now, mark your calendars and plan to join us! And we’ll hope that the sun keeps calm until then…
(Update: while we hope you’ll join us on 5/19, if you can’t make it here are a host of other gigs booked this spring and summer. Details are on our Events page.)
Hey there, Lazy Susan fans, bassist Mike D. coming to you hear from sunny Minnesota. Noticed I didn’t say “warm and sunny”…it’s February 10th after all! Last night the band had the honor of playing for the “GoRed Happy Hour”, and this Tweet from J. Bell only gives you a sample of the fun:
We’ve got some shows coming up later this spring, including April 21st at “The Bar” in Goodview. Also, we’re currently planning a CD release party at St. Paul’s Can Can Wonderland on May 19th. Mark your calendars, and stay tuned here for more news on that soon!
2016 was a great year for the Lazy Susan Band! Our new album, Underneath a Minnesota Moon, has been very well received and we couldn’t be prouder. We’ve decided to play the album top to bottom on January 27th at our favorite rock & roll bar in Minneapolis, the Driftwood Char Bar!! Come on out and hear the whole record LIVE! Tom is overseas for a while, so our old LSB band-mate Mike D is joining us for the weekend. We say weekend because the following night, January 28th, we are going to take the show down to the Contented Cow in Northfield, MN. We’ve played their summer concert series, but never inside before. We can’t wait!
